Project Finance and Development: The firm provided advisory services (in association with a Canadian firm) to the Government of Tanzania on structuring of a combined cycle coal fired electricity project at Mchuchuma, Southern Tanzania. This project entails inviting international sponsors to construct a combined cycle power station (400MW), developing coal mines at Mchuchuma and Katewaka coalfields and construction of 200 kilometers long two single circuit 330kV transmission line. Lawcastles advised on project legal structure and prepared key agreements. In 2006, Lawcastles advised sponsors in Kiwira Coal Fired Electricity Project (200MW). This is the first coal fired electricity project in Tanzania and the first power station in the country to use supercritical & utrasupercritical boilers technology. Other recent projects include providing advisory services to Government of Tanzania on performance based road maintenance concession study for Mtwara-Mbamba Bay Road in Southern Tanzania.
 
Distribution and Franchising: In 2006, Lawcastles provided advisory services to Tata Motors Limited for establishment of distribution network in Tanzania.
 
Commercial Lending: One of the projects that have been concluded recently in which Lawcastles provided advisory services involved acquisition finance loan facility (US$ 650 million). In this transaction, Lawcastles acted as local counsel for administrative agent, namely, Wachovia Bank, National Association in relation to taking security over the assets of the borrower’s Tanzanian subsidiary.
 
Corporate Insolvency and Cross-Border Restructurings: Lawcastles is currently advising South African aircraft leasing companies in relation to liquidation of one of the Tanzanian privately owned airline, Eagle Air Limited.
 
Telecommunications: Lawcastles has an extensive experience in the area of telecommunications and broadcasting law. One of the partners at Lawcastles participated in the study that resulted into introduction of converged licensing regime in Tanzania in 2005.
 
Commercial Arbitration, Litigation and Expert Determination: Lawcastles is currently representing one of the biggest detergent manufacturers in Yemen in a litigation involving infringement of trademark rights by a Tanzanian distributor.
